WILLIAMSBURG - Colonial Williamsburg experienced a decrease in visitors last year for the fifth year in a row, and it's being blamed largely on bad weather in December.
Paid attendance fell from 922,000 in 1992 to 909,500 for 1993, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation spokesman Patrick Milliman said Friday.
"The foundation stood a real chance of reporting its first yearly attendance increase since 1988 until the snow and ice came," he said.
"Local and regional visits by people living from Washington, D.C., to North Carolina are extremely important, especially at Christmas. The snow and ice did have an effect on those people."
There was a 14 percent increase in conference business, hotel revenues were up 8 percent and restaurant revenues increased 6 percent.
Colonial Williamsburg hotel rooms were rented 79,800 times during the year - 2,000 more than the previous conference room record, set in 1989, said Gary Brown, director of hotel sales. - Associated Press
\ Drive tops $20 million at Lynchburg College
LYNCHBURG - Lynchburg College has topped the $20 million mark in its capital campaign, but still needs $9 million more to meet its fund-raising goal, officials said.
The college has set a June 30, 1995, deadline for its $29.2 million campaign. Money raised will fund campus facilities, including a new science lab addition and renovation; endowment funds for faculty, programs and student aid; and other academic programs.
The largest recent gift was a bequest of $492,780 from the estate of alumnus E. Madison Grant and his wife, the late Anne Deffenbaugh Grant, officials said. - Associated Press
