1 DEAD, 1 INJURED IN SHOOTING AT COLLEGE

One Norfolk State University student was killed and another injured Tuesday in a shooting in one of the school's dormitories, authorities said.

Gerard Edwards, 23, was shot to death about 2:45 a.m. in Scott Hall, a men's dorm, said Cpl. C.R. Moore of the Norfolk Police Department homicide division. Ronald Richardson, 23, was listed in critical condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Moore said both men were students, but he did not know long they had been at the school.

He released no details on events leading up to the shooting and would not say whether authorities had any suspects.

"We're still investigating," Moore said. "Right now, we don't know who shot them."

The school released a brief statement Tuesday morning, saying: "Norfolk State University is very sorry for the unfortunate incident that has taken place within its dormitory. It is being investigated by the Norfolk Police Department and, at this time, the university is in sorrow."

Norfolk State spokesman Jerald D. Tyler said university officials were unable to release any additional information.
