When last presented with a salary cap proposal in 1990, the Major League Baseball Players Association said there was no reason for it. Owners dropped the demand after a spring-training lockout.
Milwaukee Brewers president Bud Selig, chairman of the ruling executive council, said the 28-0 vote by the owners was a step toward ensuring baseball's financial future.
While the owners found agreement on a revenue-sharing plan, there was no progress on the search for a new commissioner.
A seven-hour meeting Monday failed to recommend a candidate, and Atlanta Braves chairman Bill Bartholomay, chairman of the search committee, said his group would reconvene later Tuesday night. Selig, however, wasn't so sure, and the discussion may not resume until today.
