OTHER HOLOCAUST FILMS

"Schindler's List" is among a handful of recent big-studio films to deal with the Holocaust. Other films, documentaries and television projects that have addressed that traumatic subject include:

"Sophie's Choice" (1982): Meryl Streep won an Oscar as an Auschwitz survivor settled in Brooklyn after World War II; from the autobiographical novel by William Styron.

"The Pawnbroker" (1965): The best performance of Rod Steiger's career was as a Jewish pawnbroker in Harlem who is haunted by his experiences in a Nazi camp during the Holocaust.

"Exodus" (1960): The aftermath of the Holocaust encompasses this sporadic drama adapted from the novel by Leon Uris; with Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint and Sal Mineo in an Oscar-nominated performance.

"The Winds of War" (1983), "War and Remembrance" (1984): The longest and most expensive miniseries in TV history dealt widely with Nazi persecution. Based on Herman Wouk's best-seller.

"Holocaust" (1978): This miniseries focused on two families, one Jewish and one German, during the war years. Memorable performances from Michael Moriarty and Meryl Streep.

"The Diary of Anne Frank" (1959): The drama of a family in hiding from the Nazis is told through the diary of 13-year-old Anne Frank. Shelley Winters won an Oscar and Ed Wynn received a nomination; directed by George Stevens.

"Playing for Time" (1980): Vanessa Redgrave is memorable as Fania Fevelon, who survived Auschwitz by playing in an orchestra while other inmates were marched to their deaths. Redgrave and Arthur Miller, who wrote the teleplay, won Emmys.

"Enemies, a Love Story" (1989): A hilarious confrontation based on the novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer. A post-Holocaust Jew living in Coney Island is faced with three women - his current wife, who hid him during the war; his mistress; and his former wife, whom he thought was dead. Ron Silver, Lena Olin and Anjelica Huston star.

"The Tin Drum" (1979): A German child wills himself to st op growing in response to increasing Nazi presence in Germany; adapted from the novel by Gunter Grass.

"The Garden of the Finzi-Continis" (1971): Directed by Vittoria De Sica. An aristocratic Jewish family living in Italy is devastated by increasing Fascist oppression at the beginning of World War II. The garden wall separates the family from the reality of Nazi influence - for a while.
