OBIT CARTER, ELMER RICHARD
CARTER, Elmer Richard, Chief Petty Officer (retired), 59, of Roanoke, died
Monday, January 17, 1994. To his country he was a hero with 30 years of
military service fighting bravely in Vietnam and Korea, served on Virginia
Beach Shore Patrol, San Francisco Armed Force Police Department and United
States Federal Sky Marshal. To his family he was so much more. He is survived
by his wife, Dolores A. Carter; former wife, Isabel C. Carter; daughters and
sons-in-law, Elizabeth R. Angell and Franklin of Nashville, Tenn., Cordelia A.
Frost (Dee Dee) and Charlie of Roanoke, Marsha E. Gibson and Tom of Columbus,
Ohio; nephew (son), Robert J. Carter; mother, Gladys E. Mattox; brothers and
sisters-in-law, John O. Carter and Terry, Dean T. Carter; sisters and
brothers-in-law, Virginia M. Scott and Tootie, Mildred M. Dickerson and Don;
nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held
at the V.F.W. Hall in Vinton with Pastor Greg Reynolds presiding at 7 p.m. on
Thursday, January 20. He lived his life that uncommon valor was a common
virtue.
