TRUCK HIT BY TRAIN IN BIG ISLAND; 2 HURT

Two men were injured Thursday morning after their truck collided with a freight train, officials said.

Clarence Elmore Younger of Big Island and the driver, Gary Lee Short of Lynchburg, were taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Short suffered cuts and a possible head injury. Both men were treated and released.

While leaving the Georgia Pacific plant in Big Island shortly after 9 a.m., the men's truck had trouble gaining traction on the ice-covered parking lot, said state police Trooper Rick Sneed. Short hit the accelerator to cross the tracks and didn't see the train in time, he said.

The CSX freight train was traveling slowly as it crossed the private tracks.
