PIPPEN ARRESTED OVER GUN

Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon after Chicago police noticed a handgun in his car.

Police said he was arrested shortly after midnight Thursday, after a Chicago police officer checking out Pippen's illegally parked car noticed the loaded semiautomatic weapon.

Pippen had been in a restaurant and had come outside while police were around his car. Police said although he had a license for the gun, it is illegal to carry it in public.

Unlawful possession of a weapon is a misdemeanor, said watch commander Walter Logan, who added that Pippen spent 45 minutes behind bars before he was released on a $100 cash bond.

Pippen and the Bulls had no comment on the incident Thursday. Thursday's games

\ Notes\ \ NBA LOOKS SOUTH: Mexico City will have an NBA franchise by the end of this decade, Commissioner David Stern said Thursday during a news conference announcing that San Antonio will be the site of the 1996 All-Star Game.

"By the year 2000, we are going to have a franchise in Mexico City," Stern said, adding that the NBA will open an office in Mexico City in 1995. The league already has offices in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Madrid.

Stern said Mexico City again will have four NBA exhibition games in October, including two featuring the San Antonio Spurs, and the city would would be the first step in expansion throughout Latin America.
