BUCS' BUYER STILL IN BULLPEN

An application by the Salem Buccaneers' prospective ownership group to the Carolina League has taken longer than expected to prepare. But the paperwork on the sale of the baseball team to a group headed by Eric Margenau should be ready early next week, Margenau said Friday.

Meanwhile, Margenau and one of his partners, Fred Mayerson, say they plan to attend Monday's meeting of the Salem City Council.

"Just a courtesy call to introduce ourselves," Margenau said.

The sale of the Bucs by Kelvin Bowles to Margenau's group depends on a vote of Carolina League owners. When the league has all the paperwork in hand, a meeting will be called. League bylaws require 15 days' notice of a meeting, President John Hopkins said.

Margenau and Bowles have said they do not anticipate a problem with approval of the deal. The sale price is believed to be $2 million.

The City of Salem has gone on record with the league as being opposed to out-of-town ownership. Should the sale go through, Salem would be the only team in the league owned by a group or individual with no local ties.

Margenau did not seem concerned about the city's opposition.

"I have spoken to the mayor [Jim Taliaferro] and it was very amicable," Margenau said. "I do not think [the city's opposition] will continue to be an issue."

Taliaferro was out of town Friday and unavailable for comment.
