DESHAZO NAMED MVP FOR HOKIES

Maurice DeShazo capped a record-setting season with the Most Valuable Player award Sunday night at the Virginia Tech football team's annual banquet.

DeShazo, a junior from Bassett, threw a school-record 22 touchdown passes during the regular season and completed two more in a 45-20 Independence Bowl victory over Indiana.

Other award-winners Sunday night were: flanker Steve Sanders, honored as the Hokies' top senior; linebacker Marcus McClung, given the William Schneider Award for academic and athletic achievement; and center Jim Petrovich, chosen to receive the Freddie Cobb Award as the non-starter who contributed the most to team spirit.

In other sports in the region:

Tracy Poff is stepping down as the Shawsville High School boys' basketball coach for the rest of the season to take over as interim assistant principal at the school.

Poff, who also coaches girls' basketball for the Shawnees, will handle his new duties through June 30. He replaces Frank Mauceri, who has asked for a temporary personal leave.

Eric Altizer, who coaches the boys' junior varsity, will serve as interim head coach while keeping the JV job for the rest of the season.

"The new duties I have included so much that Im not used to doing, it was hard to do both [coaching and administration]," said Poff, whose boys' team is 0-10. "But I'll be back [as coach] next year."

Susan Given of Roanoke finished fourth in the women's race and first in the master's class in the San Diego Marathon in Carlsbad, Calif., Sunday. The Roanoker finished the 26-mile, 385-yard race in 3 hours, 12 minutes, 32 seconds after losing an early lead. Cheryl Bradley of Honolulu won the race in 3:00:16.

VMI's John Trudgeon was named coach of the year for the second consecutive year and the Keydets' Charley Branch was the MVP during the Virginia State Wrestling Championships, held Friday and Saturday in Lynchburg. VMI finished second to Old Dominion.
