TURNER TO LEAVE BOARD COUNCIL POLICY LIMITS MEMBERS TO 3 TERMS

Roanoke School Board member James Turner will have to leave his post in June because of a three-term limit for board members.

Turner, a former chairman, is the senior board member, having served since 1985. His current term ends June 30.

City Council members imposed the three-term limit several years ago, saying they wanted to ensure rotation among board members.

Turner, who was chairman from 1989 to 1991, is the first board member to be affected by the term limit. He has served three three-year terms.

City Attorney Wilburn Dibling told City Council Monday that the rule would bar Turner from serving another term.

Turner, chief executive officer of J.M. Turner & Co., could not be reached Monday for comment.

Meanwhile, Marilyn Curtis and Wendy O'Neil, two other board members whose terms also end June 30, said they will seek new terms.

Curtis, who has served two terms, said she had decided not to seek reappointment but changed her mind after considering the changes in the school system and the need for continuity.

With changes brought on by new Superintendent Wayne Harris, the departure of Turner from the board and other developments, Curtis said she decided to seek another term.

Curtis is a corporate officer for Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

O'Neil, executive director of the YWCA of Roanoke Valley, is completing her first term on the board.

Applications will be taken until March 10 for the three seats, with terms beginning July 1. Application forms are available in the City Clerk's Office, Room 456 of the Municipal Building.

City Council appoints the board members after publicly interviewing the three finalists for each seat.

The terms of the seven-member board are staggered.
