GENDER EQUITY CONFERENCE PLANNED AGAIN BY AAUW

``How Schools Shortchange Girls,'' a report by the American Association of University Women, brought to national attention how girls are discouraged from achieving in school, particularly in math and science.

Last year the Blacksburg chapter sponsored a Gender Equity Conference, but President Paula Wilder said the group believed that not much progress had been made in Montgomery County in the last year.

This year's conference, free and open to the public, will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and run through 12:30 p.m.. Focus groups include: How to Assess Schools for Gender Fairness; Girls, Math and Science; and Raising Teacher Awareness.

Elizabeth Hawa of the Virginia Department of Education will speak, as well as Caroline Pickens, who works in the national office of AAUW.

A lunch discussion will follow on setting up a science summer camp for girls.

Lunch will cost about $7.50.

The conference will be held at the Blacksburg Transit Building, 2800 Commerce St.

To register, call Lisa Connelly at 552-6470.
