ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY FALLS TO SALEM

Mark Byington had 25 points to lead Salem to a 73-53 victory over Rockbridge County in a Blue Ridge District basketball game Tuesday.

The game matched Timesland's top two scorers, Byington (26.8 points per game) and Rockbridge County's Marty Early. Early, averaging 24.4 points per game entering Tuesday, was held to seven.

Byington, meanwhile, had 19 of his points in the first half, when Salem (10-0 overall, 3-0 in the district, ranked second in Group AA) took a 40-22 lead. Matt Woolwine added 16 points for Salem and Nathan Routt had 10.

Kenny Lewis had 22 points for Rockbridge County (5-4, 0-3). \

MAX MEADOWS - Dyer Jackson nailed a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Pioneers a Mountain Empire District win over the Rockets.

Jackson finished with a career-high 35 points and Jody Burnett added 25 points and 15 rebounds for Fort Chiswell (3-7, 3-6). Jes Selfe, David Lambert and Shannon Havens led Bland (5-6, 4-4) with 15 points apiece. \

George Wythe (7-4, 6-1) outscored PH-Glade Spring (3-7, 2-4) 19-8 in the second period, forcing the Rebels into six turnovers in the quarter.

DAMASCUS - Stephen Pratt dominated inside for 21 points as the Indians kept the Cavaliers winless in a Hogoheegee District game.

Rural Retreat (6-2, 5-2) led 13-4 after one quarter, but Holston (0-13, 0-9) cut the deficit to 25-22 at halftime. The Indians kept a slim margin in the second half. \

The Raiders rolled to an easy Virginia Independent Conference victory behind the bullish play of 6-foot-1 junior Monty Smith.

Smith scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 24 rebounds for North Cross (5-5 overall, 4-2 VIC). Marcus Cardwell added 18 points for the winners. Carlisle (4-11, 2-6) was led by Kevin Warren's 24 points. \
