OBIT SADLER, PHILIP M.

SADLER, Philip M., 78, of Pulaski, died Thursday, January 27, 1994 at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, Charlottesville, Va. He was born in Silver Point, Tenn. on October 27, 1915, and was the son of the late Philip Edley Sadler and Frances Williams Sadler. He was also preceded in death by three sisters and by a brother. Mr. Sadler and his wife, Anne, recently moved to Charlottesville from Pulaski, where Mr. Sadler had been the senior partner in the law firm of Gilmer, Sadler, Ingram, Sutherland & Hutton. Mr. Sadler graduated from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute and the University of Virginia Law School after his legal education was interrupted by military service in World War II. He was commissioned as a Naval officer in 1942 and served in the European and Asian Theaters. During his Naval service, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Navy Unit Citation and the Batt Le Stars, and was discharged with the rank of Lt. Commander. Mr. Sadler commenced his legal practice in Pulaski in 1947 and had a long and distinguished career. He served as President of the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia State Bar Foundation and the Twenty-seventh Judicial Circuit Bar Association. He was elected a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Fellow in the International Society of Barristers, and was honored by the Virginia State Bar as the first recipient of the Tradition of Excellence Award. He devoted much of his life to civic affairs. Mr. Sadler served as President of the Pulaski County Jaycees, President of the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Pulaski County School Board and was a member of the Pulaski County Housing Authority and the Board of Directors of King College. He served as Chairman of the Pulaski County Democratic Committee and was recently recognized for his service to the New River Community Action Agency, Habitat for Humanity, Daily Bread and Pulaski Free Clinic. Mr. Sadler's life has been punctuated by Christian service to others. In an editorial written some years ago, Mr. Sadler was commended for his help to the needy of Pulaski County. There it was said that he had been a distinguished citizen, an example of humility and service who in his public and private life demonstrated a deep and abiding feeling for those whose opportunities had been limited by circumstances and beyond their control. In a more recent newspaper article, it was said that Mr. Sadler's "long and dedicated military, professional and civic career is indeed notable, but his real distinction lies elsewhere. With all his honors and successes, Mr. Sadler is selfless and his life's efforts have been dedicated to the service of others". Mr. Sadler was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski. Surviving are his wife, Anne Pritchett Sadler, Charlottesville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth S. and James Schank, Statesville, N.C., Marianne S. and Harry Ebert, Roanoke; one son, Philip M. Sadler Jr., Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Martha Sadler, Nashville, Tenn., Mary Sue Sadler, Nashville, Tenn.; one brother, Col. James C. Sadler(U.S.A.F. Ret.), Honolulu, Hiwaii. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 31, 1994 at 2 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Mr. Sadler's memory. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski, Va.
