North raised $1.57 million last year and spent $1.12 million, according to reports filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission.
"That's very encouraging for a guy who just announced his candidacy last Thursday," said Mark Merritt, a spokesman for North.
Robb reported raising $1.3 million in 1993 and spending $390,000.
"We're right where we want to be," said Susan Platt, Robb's campaign manager. "We will have the resources to run a strong campaign."
The reports, details of which were not available Monday, showed that Robb ended the year with $954,000 in his treasury, compared to $445,000 for North. Merritt said North already has more than made up the difference by raising an additional $800,000 since Jan. 1.
The early reports suggest that each candidate is well on his way to breaking the $11 million fund-raising record for a Virginia candidate, set by Republican Marshall Coleman in the 1989 gubernatorial election. North has estimated that he will need $15 million to run successfully.
Before they get to the general election, North and Robb face nominating contests with lesser-known candidates in their respective parties.
Republican Jim Miller, a former budget chief for Ronald Reagan, reported raising $177,000 last year and spending $124,000. He has $53,000 cash on hand.
Democrat Sylvia Clute, a Richmond lawyer, reported raising $54,000, including a $16,000 personal loan she made to her campaign. She spent $52,000, leaving her with a balance of $2,000.
