The program is trying to increase public awareness of illiteracy, which affects more than 1.5 million people in the Chesapeake region including Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
Grants of $500 to $2,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis in May to nonprofit community-based organizations. More than $500,000 in grants have been awarded since the program began in 1989.
