HOUSE PANEL SUPPORTS `WEED PLATE'

The House Roads and Internal Navigation Committee has endorsed a license plate to celebrate the state's tobacco heritage.

On an 18-3 vote Thursday, the committee sent the bill for the special plate, sponsored by Del. Frank Ruff, R-Clarksville, to the full House. No design has been specified, but supporters say it might carry a drawing of a tobacco plant to honor the state's top cash crop.

Anti-smoking activists have dubbed the proposed tag the "weed plate."
