RISK OF MENINGITIS LESSENS FOR STUDENT

Tyler Duvall, a Washington and Lee student who was diagnosed with meningococcemia last week, continues to improve at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

Duvall's father, Richard Duvall, said his son was moved Sunday from the intensive care unit to a private room, where he will likely stay for another week.

"He's recovering. He has his ups and downs, but the trend is positive," Richard Duvall said.

Tyler Duvall, a junior on the W&L men's basketball team, was diagnosed last Wednesday with a meningococcal infection, which is contagious. The infection can lead to meningitis, a potentially fatal inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Richard Duvall said it was still undecided whether his son will return to W&L this semester.

Brian Shaw, the university's director of communications, said no other cases had been diagnosed on campus. As a precaution, 39 people were given antibiotics last week.
