WILLIAMSBURG - A James City County police officer drove his patrol car into a freight train Wednesday, six hours after an Amtrak train hit a car in another part of the county, authorities said.
The second incident involved a stationary train and occurred around 3 a.m. near Busch Gardens, said James City County Police Chief Robert C. Key.
Officer Melvin Fox "said he didn't see the train," Key said.
Fox, a senior patrolman with 12 years experience, was driving between 35 mph and 40 mph on Pocahontas Trail when his patrol car struck the train, Key said. The crossing does not have a gate, but flares had been set out in the road to indicate the train was there, Key said. The car was a total loss.
In the first accident, authorities said a man drove his car around an Amtrak grade crossing gate and was struck by a passenger train traveling 79 mph. - Associated Press

\ Teacher found guilty of assaulting student
DANVILLE - A teacher has been convicted of assault and battery for hitting an 11-year-old special education student in the back with a yardstick.
Thomas Motley was convicted Monday by Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Calvin W. Fowler. The judge sentenced him to 10 days in jail but suspended the term on condition of good behavior for the next 12 months. Motley also was fined $100.
Motley, 40, who taught emotionally disturbed pupils at Westmoreland School, was charged after James Jarreau said in December that Motley hit him with a yardstick.
Motley said he hit the back of the child's chair to get his attention because the boy was unruly. But a fellow teacher who was in the classroom said Motley hit Jarreau.
