NORFOLK SOUTHERN DIRECTOR DIES AT 48

Loretta R. Donnelly, director of accounting policy for the Norfolk Southern Corp., died Wednesday at her home in Virginia Beach after a two-year battle with brain cancer. She was 48.

Donnelly, a Smyth County native, began her career with NS in 1970 as a tax accountant in Roanoke for the Norfolk and Western Railway. Other company positions held by Donnelly included cost analyst and director of budget planning and evaluations.

She moved to the Norfolk area in 1983 in conjunction with the merger of Norfolk and Western and the Southern Railway Co.

Donnelly was a founding member of the Southwest Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants. She served as the organization's president in 1979 and 1980.

Since 1988, Donnelly had served on the advisory board to the department of accounting at Virginia Tech.
