An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for Marcus Moore, 18, in the Feb. 1 death of Kevin A. Smith, 25, who was shot when he stepped outside the home of friends after watching a basketball game on television.
"Marcus didn't do it. My son was here with me," said Melvine Moore, his mother.
Melvine Moore said she and her son were in the living room when they heard shots.
"I went to the side window and looked out, and I saw the car - the unmarked police car - and undercover police out there," she said. "Marcus came over to the window and said, `Mama, what happened?' and I told him, `Baby, someone got shot.' "
Melvine Moore said her son spent a year in a juvenile correctional institution for malicious wounding. But she said the man he shot "had busted him in the head with a bottle and kept following him, threatening him."
Moore was released in June and was accepted at Norfolk State University. He attended the fall semester, majoring in communications, but had to drop out because of finances, his mother said.
