HARASSMENT BAN ON SCHOOLS' AGENDA

School officials in Salem and Roanoke County also are considering measures to prohibit sexual harassment by their students.

Roanoke County plans to revise its student conduct code this spring and will include a section on sexual harassment.

The county's code prohibits obscene gestures, offensive language and similar behavior that is sexual in nature, said Martin Robison, director of community relations.

"It is not labeled as sexual harassment, but it has the same effect," Robison said.

The county's policy manual for employees and students bans sexual harassment. It will be included in the student code to make sure students are aware of the policy, he said.

In Salem, the school system's policy manual bans sexual harassment by teachers and other employees, but not by students. However, school officials are working on a rule on sexual harassment that would apply to students. JOEL TURNER
