ALLEGHANY DROPS BOTETOURT

Alleghany went on a 10-0 run with three minutes remaining to nail down a 72-59 Blue Ridge District win over Lord Botetourt in a high school basketball game Saturday.

Lord Botetourt (8-7, 2-6) led by four points at halftime, but Alleghany (10-7, 4-4) took the lead midway through the third period when Charles Hammond sank two 3-pointers. Jermaine Winston led Alleghany's 10-0 run in the final period by hitting two 3-pointers.

James Hughes led the Mountaineers with 15 points, and Todd Wheatley added 14.

Gade Sander led the Cavaliers with 17 points. \

Castlewood 71

Rural Retreat 63

Marty Holloway scored 16 points to pace a balanced attack as Castlewood got its seventh straight victory in a Hogoheegee District battle.

Travis Scott and Jason Monk each added 13 for the Blue Devils (10-8, 8-4).

Rural Retreat (7-9, 6-7) was led by Rusty Crigger's 14 points. \

North Cross 78

The Eagles (9-11, 7-5) used accurate 3-point shooting to build an early lead, then held off the visiting Raiders (9-7, 7-3) in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Billy Fluker went 4-for-4 on 3-point attempts in the first two quarters as Roanoke Valley Christian took a 41-33 lead. The Eagles finished 7-for-12 from 3-point range.

Scott Apjok led the Eagles with 28 points and Fluker had 25, hitting another 3-pointer in the second half. Josh MacDermod added 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Marcus Cardwell and Monty Smith scored 24 points each for North Cross, which led briefly in the third quarter. \
