NEWBY LEADS TECH

Virginia Tech's Meredith Newby bettered her own school record in the 20-pound weight throw Saturday as the Hokies won the men's and women's competition at the Virginia Tech Indoor Track Championships.

Newby's throw of 47 feet, 8 1/2 inches topped the 46-6 3/4 toss she had last week.

Freshman Megan Barnes also helped the Hokies top runner-up Hampton, winning the high jump with a leap of 5-7. Barnes also finished second in the long jump and sixth in the 55-meter dash.

Tech junior Bruce Matthews won the 800 in 1 minutes, 53.4 seconds as the men's team cruised past Liberty to the title.

Salem High School graduate Keith Moyer finished fourth in the 200 meters and fifth in the 55 for the Hokies.
