SCHOOL SMOKING BAN SNUFFED

The tobacco industry's legendary muscle was on display Monday in the House of Delegates, as a bill to ban smoking in public schools was killed for the year.

The House voted 48-45 to return Del. James Almand's bill to the Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee, killing it because the committee will not meet again before tonight's deadline for each house to act on bills introduced by its members.

Almand, D-Arlington, sought to ban smoking in schools by July 1, 1995, and to bar the free distribution of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

The vote left alive only one major bill to restrict public smoking. Del. Karen Darner, D-Arlington, still has a proposal to ban smoking in schools during school hours.
