3 TO SEEK SALEM CITY COUNCIL SEATS

Two incumbents and at least one newcomer will be in the race for two seats on Salem City Council in the May 3 election.

Two council members, Carl E. Tarpley Jr. and W.M. "Mac" Green, have announced they are seeking re-election. Garry B. Lautenschlager, executive director of Virginia Emergency Medical Services, has said he will seek the Republican nomination for council at the Salem GOP's mass meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Salem Courthouse.

At least one more candidate is expected to announce before the March 1 filing deadline.

Green, who is vice mayor, has served five four-year terms as a council member and 10 two-year terms as vice mayor.

He is owner of Valley Mattress, a bedding store on Salem's Main Street, and has worked in various retail operations on Main Street since 1946. He has been a resident of Salem since 1935.

Tarpley, vice president of Salem Bank & Trust, was elected to council in 1974 and is seeking his sixth term. He is a Salem native and graduated from Andrew Lewis in 1960 when it was a high school.

Lautenschlager, who has lived in Salem since 1965, has been a longtime volunteer with the Salem Rescue Squad, where he is deputy chief.

Even though he has publicly stated his intention of seeking the Republican nomination, Lautenschlager plans to make a formal announcement at a 10 a.m. news conference Saturday at G.W. Carver Elementary School.

He said he is making the announcement at Carver because that is where his wife, Shirley, teaches and his son, Chris, attends kindergarten.
