UVA SIGNS 4 RECRUITS IN SOCCER

Virginia has announced the signing of four men's soccer players, including two Parade All-Americans, to letters of intent for the 1994-95 season.

The headliners of coach Bruce Arena's recruiting class are the two All-Americans, midfielders Andriy Shapowal of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Billy Walsh of Chatham Township, N.J. Both also are members of the U.S. under-20 national team.

The other two signees are Virginians: midfielder Sam Franklin of Yorktown High School in Arlington and goalie Yuri Sagatov of Fairfax High School.

In other sports in the region:

In Greensboro, N.C., North Carolina-Greensboro scored four runs in the second inning and went on to rout VMI 9-1 in baseball.

UNC Greensboro (2-0) held the Keydets (1-1) to two hits.

Virginia canceled a home baseball doubleheader today and moved Saturday's doubleheader because of field conditions in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers' doubleheader scheduled against East Tennessee State today will not be made up. UVa will play Saturday's doubleheader against Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., instead of in Charlottesville.

William Byrd and Rustburg advanced to the semifinals with victories in the Region III volleyball tournament at Dry Fork Thursday.

The Terriers defeated Tunstall 17-15, 16-14 and the Devils defeated Salem 15-5, 12-15, 15-1.

William Byrd will face Jefferson Forest at 1 p.m. Saturday. Rustburg will play Bassett 20 minutes after the first match. The championship match will be played an hour after the second semifinal.
