VETERANS RETURN TO MARK WARTIME PRISON BREAK

Daring Allied bomber pilots who blasted open the gates of a Nazi prison returned Friday to join former Resistance fighters observing 50-year ceremonies honoring the World War II jailbreak.

Traveling from as far as Australia and New Zealand, the 13 elderly RAF veterans, some accompanied by their wives, bent against a cold wind during a minute of silence as a wreath was laid against the walls their bombs hit.

In a carefully planned raid Feb. 18, 1944, 18 small Mosquito bombers of Britain's Royal Air Force carried out a request by the Resistance to fly in low and bomb the gates and walls of the prison. - Associated Press
