YOUNG WOMAN OF THE YEAR CROWNED

Amy Reed, winner of the Hampton Roads Young Woman of the Year competition, was crowned Virginia's Young Woman of the Year for 1994 at the Roanoke Civic Center on Saturday.

Reed, who won the panel evaluation and the presence and composure categories in preliminary judging, competed against 20 other high school seniors from across the state for college scholarship money.

The young women are judged on scholastic and creative achievement, composure and physical fitness.

Roanoke's Kerri Mikkelsen, daughter of Robert and Billie Mikkelsen, was named first alternate and was the fitness preliminary winner.

The second alternate and scholastic winner was Rebecca Lemartin of Fairfax. Vinton's Rachel Allen, daughter of Jim and Susan Perry, was third alternate.

Stephanie Halbert, winner of the Tri-Cities' (Petersburg-area) competition, won the creative and performing preliminary. Pamela Leland of Virginia Beach, won the Spirit of Junior Miss award.

Betty Evans of the Hampton Roads program was named outstanding local chairperson, and the Tri-Cities Young Woman of the Year program was named outstanding local program.
