HOLLINS CONFERENCE LOOKS AT APPALACHIA

The Southern Appalachian mountains will be the subject of a day-long conference at Hollins College on Wednesday.

A panel will discuss the history of man's impact on this region, and the many environmental forces that threaten the health of Appalachian forests.

The workshop is sponsored by The Southern Appalachian Man and the Biosphere Cooperative, a public and private consortium formed in 1988 and dedicated to solving natural resource problems using a balance of sound economic and environmental practices.

Among the topics will be farming, logging, fire control, gypsy moths, Southern pine beetles, and ozone damage.

The workshop is scheduled from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Talmadge Recital Hall on the campus, on February 23. It is open to the public. Registration is $20.
