TEACHER OF THE WEEK

When Sybil Taylor talks about teaching, the enthusiasm she has for her job, even after 18 years, comes through loud and clear. "What I love about teaching is that each day is a new day. There's always something to discover," she said.

Taylor's enthusiasm appears to be contagious. "Mrs. Taylor is such a joyful, happy and fun teacher. Every day she thinks of something creative for us to do," said one of the pupils who nominated her.

Taylor encourages cooperative learning, where children work together in small groups. "It's not who they work with that's an issue, but what is accomplished," she said. She also is willing to abandon textbooks if she feels the need, and advocates hands-on learning activities.

Taylor, known for her creative classroom decorations and bulletin boards, credits her co-workers at Highland Park Magnet School and Learning Center in Roanoke with helping her maintain her high level of interest in her job. "Their support has been crucial," she said.

Taylor is married, the mother of two children and two grandsons, and enjoys quilting and tennis.
