PENTAGON: DISMISS 29 CADETS FOR CHEATING

Seventy-one midshipmen were involved in the largest cheating scandal in U.S. Naval Academy history, and 29 should be dismissed for violating its honor code, the Pentagon concluded Thursday.

Although the 42 others implicated for cheating on a 1992 electrical engineering exam will be allowed to graduate, they face disciplinary actions that may include delayed graduation and retaking the course, said Lt. Cate Mueller, an academy spokeswoman.

The 29 students have two more appeals to the chief of naval operations and the secretary of the Navy.

Those expelled can be required to serve three years in the Navy or repay the $80,000 that taxpayers spent on their education. - Associated Press
