LAWMAKERS OPPOSE REDSKINS

Lake Superior State won its second NCAA hockey title in three seasons, scoring during three straight second-period power plays to break open a close game Saturday night and routing Boston University 9-1 in St. Paul, Minn.

Lake Superior State (31-10-4), which also won the 1992 championship under Roanoke Express coach Frank Anzalone, scored five second-period goals and recorded the most lopsided championship victory since Denver beat St. Lawrence 12-2 in 1961.

Arkansas' Erick Walder jumped 28 feet, 8 1/4 inches Saturday in El Paso, Texas, to break Carl Lewis' 13-year-old college long jump record by 4 3/4 inches.

While at Houston, Lewis leaped 28-3 1/2 at Sacramento, Calif., on June 20, 1981.

Walder is a two-time NCAA outdoor long jump champion and a three-time indoor champion.

Heavily favored Canaveral, considered a major contender for the Kentucky Derby, faded to last in the $200,000 Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah Park in Florida, losing to 26-1 shot Meadow Flight.

Meadow Flight finished two lengths ahead of Bay Street Star in the 1[-mile race for 3-year-olds. Amathos was third.
