TECH RALLIES COME UP SHORT

Virginia Tech left the tying run in scoring position in the seventh and ninth innings and dropped a 4-3 decision to Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday in a Metro Conference baseball game in Blacksburg.

After the Rams (19-9 overall, 4-2 in the Metro) built a four-run lead, the Hokies (11-15, 3-5) rallied for three runs in the seventh.

With a runner on first via a walk, David Fitt singled to put runners at first and third. After a wild pitch by VCU starter Michael Henke (3-2), Reese Murdaugh came out of the bullpen and gave up back-to-back RBI doubles by Bryan King and Kevin Barker.

Tommy Nuckols worked out of that jam and stranded another runner at second in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
