WILD PITCH HELPS ODU TRIP TECH

Old Dominion scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday to edge Virginia Tech 7-6 in a men's college baseball game at English Field in Blacksburg.

Bo Durkac, who finished with three hits, scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Hokies (11-16) a 6-4 lead, but the Monarchs (28-3) scored two unearned runs in the eighth to tie the score at 6-6.

Kevin Gibbs gave Old Dominion, which has won 16 of its past 17 games, the lead after he tripled and scored on a Charlie Gillian (0-1) wild pitch. Gibbs finished with three hits - a single, double and triple.

In other regional news:

Radford pounded Milligan with 23 hits en route to a 17-7 win at Dedmon Center Park in Radford.

Radford (14-12) scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, four in the fourth, and five in the sixth to take a 16-5 lead after six innings. Left fielder Duane Filchner had three hits and four RBI, and Jeff Dean and Rob Wilson each had four hits and three RBI for the Highlanders.

Chad Langrehr (2-2) picked up the win, scattering nine hits and five runs in six innings.

Kelly Fackler of Lynchburg College has been named to the first team of the NCAA Division II-III women's all-state basketball team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors' Association.

Fackler, a freshman from Collinsville, averaged 21.8 points per game this season for the Hornets.

Christopher Newport senior Karen Barefoot was named player of the year and was on the first team along with Ana Litton of Longwood, Ann Faulk of Hampton and Violane Romans of Marymount.

Niki Claiborne and Glossary Smith of Ferrum received honorable mentions along with Kristie Workman of Roanoke.

Three Virginia Tech students will compete against teams from seven other schools Friday in the Schick Super Hoops Northeast Division Championship at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.

Phil Curtin, Mike Curtin and Matt Sullivan will represent Tech in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The winning team will represent the Northeast in the Schick Super Hoops National Championship April 24 in Houston.

In Longs, S.C., Radford's Olivia Faison tied for fourth place at the Big South Conference women's golf tournament.

Faison, a freshman, had a score of 154, three strokes behind champion Jennifer Layman of Campbell. The Highlanders finished sixth as a team. Campbell won the tournament.

The Radford men finished seventh overall, with sophomore Austin Harper's 20th-place finish the highest among the Highlanders.
