UVa coach Jeff Jones, contacted at the Capital Classic All-Star Game in College Park, Md., left no doubt that Perrin is the man to beat for the job.
"We've got to advertise for the position and take applications," Jones said. "I don't know exactly what the law is, [but] Tom is aware of what it takes and what is needed."
Perrin has been at Virginia for 12 years as a graduate and restricted-earnings coach. He has not been on the road as a recruiter, "but there is no question of his competence and work ethic," Jones said.
Wolff, 39, was the first original member of Jones' staff to leave. He arrived in 1990 and has been a finalist for jobs at Manhattan, Loyola (Md.) and Marshall.
Boston University was 10-17 last season under Bob Brown, but has had success in the past under Rick Pitino and Mike Jarvis.
"What excites me most is that Boston Wolff University is not a developing program years away from being a [North Atlantic Conference] challenger," Wolff said.
Wolff, from New York, played at LSU and Connecticut and was an assistant at St. Bonaventure, Wake Forest and SMU.
"I really had anticipated keeping the staff together for three years," said Jones, who in his fourth year as the Cavaliers' head coach. "While I didn't ask for a commitment, that was something we discussed."
Wolff is a respected recruiter whose prize catch at UVa was Junior Burrough.
