SUIT ACCUSES POLICE OF AGE BIAS IN HIRING

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed an age-discrimination suit against the Roanoke County Police Department.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Roanoke on Friday, alleges that the Police Department refused to hire James L. Phillips in 1992 because he was 49 years old.

The EEOC is asking the court to grant Phillips back pay as well as unspecified damages.

The suit also asks the court for a permanent injunction prohibiting age discrimination against job applicants over the age of 40.

Details weren't included in the suit and EEOC attorneys couldn't be reached Friday.
