FORD, CHRYSLER GET A BOOST

With the return of the "big carburetor," Ford and Chrysler cars are expected to be more competitive tonight at New River Valley Speedway in the Pepsi-Cola 100-lap Late Model Stock Car race.

NASCAR earlier this week granted the Ford and Chrysler drivers use of the "big carburetor" plus 50 pounds of weight on an experimental basis. It will be the first chance veterans Ronnie Thomas, Frankie Pennington, Tink Reedy, Stacy Compton and Bobby Radford will have to test the new set-up on their racers.

Also on the card are a 35-lapper for the Limited Sportsmen and 25 laps each for the Mod Mini, Mini and Pure Stock drivers.

Gates open at 2 p.m. with practice at 4. Qualifying begins at 6:15 with the first green flag at 8.

Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

Bill Stewart will make his debut as VMI's football coach in the Keydets' intrasquad spring scrimmage today at 1:30 p.m. at Alumni Memorial Field in Lexington.

The Greensboro Dynamo will take on the Richmond Kickers at 7 tonight at the Cave Spring Junior High School stadium in the first professional soccer game played in Roanoke. Tickets are $4.

Defensive end Mike Frederick, linebacker Randy Neal, and fullback Charles Way have been named captains of the 1994 Virginia football team, coach George Welsh announced Friday.

Frederick, a rising redshirt senior, was a second-team All-ACC selection last year. Neal, a rising senior, was third-team All-ACC, and Way, a rising redshirt senior, was third on the team in rushing with 468 yards.

In Durham, N.C., the Virginia Tech men's track and field team won three individual events at the Duke Invitational.

Cave Spring graduate John Hawthorne won the 10,000 meters in 30 minutes, 40.66 seconds, Chris Williams won the pole vault with a leap of 17 feet, and Chris Sieben won the javelin. The competition will conclude today.

Virginia Tech will honor 170 student-athletes for their strong academic performances today at the Athletic Directors' Honors Brunch at The Donaldson Brown Center in Blacksburg.

The brunch begins at 10 a.m. and will honor athletes, trainers, managers, cheerleaders and HighTechs who have posted grade-point averages of 3.0 or above for the past two semesters.
