WHERE THE CANDIDATES STAND

Would you support more money to promote area to tourists?

For the two-year term:

John Voit: If can spend a few extra dollars and get back far more, ought to do it.

Linda Wyatt: Not familiar with funding situation now, but tourism is part of economic development package

For the three 4-year terms:

Barbara Duerk: Not sure about money issue, but wants lots more efforts made toward tourism

John Edwards: Would be "favorably" inclined toward increasing financial support of the Roanoke Valley Convention & Visitors Center, but would like to see it a cooperative effort with other valley governments

Nelson Harris: Dollars spent promoting area are an "investment."

John Parrott: Maybe; supports current promotion efforts and wants more, but not familiar with current funding level

William White: Voted for last increase in funding for tourism promotion; would like to see other valley governments chip in their "fair share."

\ Would you support the construction of a trade center somewhere in the Gainsboro area?

Voit: Something definitely could support, but have to look at details

Wyatt: It would be a component of economic development, but where and what it would be would have to be looked at

We need a larger exhibit hall, but doesn't have to be in Gainsboro

Edwards: Yes, was on Roanoke Civic Center committee pushing idea for facility that would include parking floors

Harris: Probably, after Hotel Roanoke is "blossoming"

Parrott: Need to look at other projects after Hotel Roanoke is "up and running."

White: Trade center "conceptually good," but needs further study after hotel and conference center gets going
