FERRUM WINS DIXIE GAME

Ferrum scored three times in the seventh inning and held on for a 6-5 victory over Christopher Newport on Thursday in the first round of the Dixie Conference baseball tournament at Dan Daniel Memorial Park in Danville.

The Panthers (21-3) trailed 3-0 and 5-3. Cal Scarce went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including the game-winning double in the seventh.

Keith Mayhew (6-1) picked up the victory. Kevin Anderson earned his fourth save.

Ferrum plays the winner of the Thursday night's Methodist-Shenandoah game at 7 p.m. today in the double-elimination tournament.

In other college baseball:

In Lexington, Ryan Glynn hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to propel VMI to a 12-3 rout of Virginia. The victory was the Keydets' first over the Cavaliers since 1990.

Louie Napoleon hit his fourth triple of the season and the eighth of his career in the first inning for VMI (14-20), tying the school record held by Terry Batts.

Brian Buchanan had three hits, including two home runs, for Virginia (14-20). Buchanan's first homer was his 15th of the season, setting a single-season school record.

In Boone, N.C., freshman Kevin Barker led off the 10th inning with a home run to give Virginia Tech a 7-6 victory over Appalachian State.

Sophomore first baseman David Fitt hit a solo home run with two out in the ninth inning for the Hokies (16-17) to tie the score.
