Walkathon starts at fairground

DUBLI - The New River Valley Fairgrounds will be the starting and ending point for the annual Pulaski County/Montgomery County March of Dimes walkathon today at 9 a.m.

Proceeds from the walk go to improve the health of infants by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. There will be a five-mile walk and an optional ten-mile walk. All participants must be sponsored.

Pledge forms are available at various businesses throughout the New River Valley or at the New River Community College campus. Call 674-3600, ext. 326 or 287 to get pledge forms or further information.

Yard-sale donations sought

CHRISTIANSBURG - Donations are being sought for the Straight Street Youth Center fund-raiser yard sale to be held May 7, 7 a.m. until noon.

Contributors should first call 381-1006 to drop items off at the center at 300 N. Franklin St., starting today through the morning of the sale.

All donations are tax-deductable, and receipts are available.

Free plane rides Sunday

DUBLIN - Youngsters between the ages of eight and 17 can get free airplane rides Sunday starting at 1 p.m., as Chapter 906 of the Experimental Aircraft Association sponsors the Young Eagles program at New River Valley Airport off Virginia 100. The program hopes to introduce one million youngsters to aviation by the year 2003.

There is no charge, but a parent or guardian must fill out a registration card.
