WYTHEVILLE - Several business owners have contacted Downtown Wytheville Inc. about improving the storefronts to enhance the area's appearance.
Mary Britt, Tracey Holiday and Assistant Town Manager Steve Moore were named to a committee that will develop criteria for downtown improvement projects.
The owners of the Smith's Jewelers building and those who own a building on the opposite side of Main Street from the Post Office have expressed an interest in storefront renovations.
Downtown Wytheville has looked into requirements for becoming involved in the national Main Street program, which has had successes in nearby communities like Radford, Galax and Pulaski.
Wythe UW not in full compliance
WYTHEVILLE - United Way of Wythe County Inc. was among six organizations that did not comply fully with requirements of the Virginia Solicitation for Contributions Law, according to a list by the Division of Consumer Affairs.
But the Rev. Tom Sproule, United Way president, said the problems were merely a matter of not sending some required information on time.
``It is paperwork which was to have been sent in that was delayed,'' he said. ``The paperwork to take care of this and correct it is already in the mail.''
Sproule said the local United Way was winding up its fiscal year and was moving to a new location, from the First Union Bank in Wytheville to an office on West Main Street in the former Leggett building. Filing the necessary materials was overlooked during those changes, he said.
He pointed out that the organization is audited regularly and information on proceeds distribution is available to the public.
Fire stations may be built
WYTHEVILLE - New fire stations may be built in the Max Meadows and Ivanhoe areas of eastern Wythe County.
The county Board of Supervisors is looking into buying property for those stations. Offers of land available for sale should be made by April 27 to the office of County Administrator Billy Branson.
In Max Meadows, the station would have to be located on property either on Virginia 121, between the Reed Creek Bridge and Interstate 81; U.S. 52, up to one mile south of the interstate interchange; or the service road up to a mile east or west of interstate Exit 80.
The Ivanhoe site could be located on Virginia 94, up to a mile south of the Cripple Creek bridge or a mile north of Porter's Crossroads, or Virginia 619 up to a mile east of Porter's Crossroads.
College plans transfer courses
WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville Community College will offer a variety of five-week and 10-week college transfer courses starting May 23, with another five-week session starting June 29.
For students who start classes May 23, it will be possible to complete a full year of transfer course sequences.
Courses will be offered in both day and evening sessions. They include English composition, general biology, college chemistry, introduction to speech communication, pre-calculus and applied calculus mathematics, principles of accounting, survey of American literature, U.S. history, U.S. government, music appreciation and introduction to philosophy.
