She came to Roanoke in 1972 to do her student teaching at Melrose Elementary. She liked it so much she got a full-time job in Roanoke's schools.
"I graduated on a Friday, went to work the next Monday and I've been at it ever since."
Her family followed her to Roanoke; her mother, sister and two brothers now live here.
Wyatt has been active in the Democratic Party in Roanoke for two decades. She is secretary of the party's Sixth District committee and a member of its state central committee.
She also is on the board of directors of the Virginia Education Association and National Education Association.
