VMI SIGNS 6-FOOT-10 BASKETBALL RECRUIT

Robison, originally from Chilicothe, Ohio, suffered a stress fracture in one of his feet that limited his availability this past season at Fork Union Military Academy.

Robinson joins 6-5 Nate Shiflett from Charlotte, N.C., who signed with VMI this week.

Ryan Glynn did the job on the mound and at the plate in VMI's 6-4 Southern Conference baseball tournament victory over sixth-seeded Marshall in Charleston, S.C.

Glynn pitched 8 innings to pick up the victory, giving up eight hits and striking out four. He hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score at 3.

A pair of doubles by John Payne and Jimmy Williams gave seventh-seeded VMI (21-27) the winning margin.

The Keydets, who set a single-season school record for victories, will play The Citadel, seeded fifth, in the winner's bracket final at 3 p.m. today. They are the only unbeaten teams in the double-elimination tournament.

Four VMI players were named to the all-conference team in balloting by the league's coaches: Glynn, Payne, second baseman Louie Napoleon and shortstop Dmbavid Groseclose.

Virginia tight end Aaron Mundy and cornerback Greg McClellan signed free-agent contracts with the Dallas Cowboys on Friday. Mundy, a first-team All-ACC selection, had 85 receptions in his career with the Cavaliers. The 6-foot-5, 280-pounder is a Hampton native. McClellan is a 5-10, 193-pound native of Winston-Salem, N.C.

In another signing, David Pyne, brother of Virginia Tech All-America center Jim Pyne, signed a contract with the New York Giants.

Odell Hodge,a sophomore from Martinsville, has been named Most Valuable Player for the Old Dominion men's basketball team.

Hodge, the Colonial Athletic Association's player of the year, is the third Monarch to surpass the 1,000-point mark as a sophomore.

Stephanie Herbert, a Blacksburg High School graduate, was named James Madison's female scholar-athlete of the year.

Herbert, a senior majoring in political science, has a 3.83 grade-point average and has earned All-East honors twice in the 10,000 meters and once in the 5,000 in track.

Jennifer Shimrak and Liz Florence scored four goals apiece, and Roanoke used a nine-goal second half to beat Randolph-Macon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's lacrosse semifinal.

The Maroons (10-3), ranked seventh nationally, will play the winner of today's Lynchburg-Washington and Lee semifinal at 1 p.m. Sunday for the championship.
