McGuire, the track's first Late Model Stock Car champion in 1988, started eighth in the 20-car field and moved up to third behind Jeff Agnew, race winner, and Michael Ritch. McGuire's closest competition was Chad Harris of Stuarts Draft, who improved four positions during the race.
McGuire joins Ronnie Thomas, Gary Richards and Malcolm Fink on the list. An overall winner will be selected from the weekly recipients.
One of the two drivers hurt Saturday afternoon during a practice lap crash remains in the Pulaski hospital. Doug Vaught of Christiansburg suffered broken ribs, facial lacerations which required 35 stitches, a broken foot and a bruised spleen in the crash. He remained in the hospital Monday and faces a possible operation on his injured foot. The crash also involved David Huff of Hillsville, who suffered broken ribs. He was treated and released Saturday from a hospital in Radford.
The crash occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. during the weekly practice session. Vaught spun out in turn 4, and the car had stopped near the center of the track. The left front of his Modified Mini Stock racer was hit almost at full speed by Huff. Both cars received extensive damage and could be total losses.
