TERRIERS BITE WILDCATS

Shannon Gray scored the winning run when he was walked with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, keeping William Byrd undefeated with a 2-1 win over Rockbridge County in a Blue Ridge District high school baseball game in Vinton on Monday.

Mike McGuire pitched a two-hitter for the Terriers (12-0 overall, 4-0 district), striking out six. The Wildcats are 6-6 and 2-2.

In other high school baseball:

Kevin Feazell was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, scored three runs and have five stolen bases as Salem whipped host Patrick Henry 9-2 in a non-district game.

R.J. Beckwith pitched a complete game in picking up the win, striking out three and allowing seven hits.

Bev Chaffin, Russell Smith and Brandon Painter combined to pitch a two-hit shutout as Liberty breezed past William Campbell 10-0 in a Seminole District game at Bedford.

Keith Carter led the Minutemen (4-8, 4-8), going 3-for-3 with 3 RBI.

In New Castle, Jon Rodgers struck out 10 in pitching a complete game and was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI as Bath County (7-4, 3-3) edged Craig County 7-5 in a Pioneer District game.

The Rockets are 5-8 and 4-4.

Jeff Woodford was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and Daniel Eubank was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI as Staunton River (6-5, 6-5) beat Rustburg 14-3 in a Seminole District game in Moneta.

At Tazewell, the Bulldogs scored six runs in the sixth inning to beat Blacksburg 9-4 in a non-district game.

Eric Motley's two-run triple in the sixth gave Tazewell (11-0) the lead for good. Blacksburg (3-8) was held to four hits.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Jason Criss posted his seventh shutout of the season as William Byrd (9-0, 7-0) beat Salem 2-0 in a Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.

Shane Duddy scored three goals as host Roanoke Catholic (7-6) beat James River 5-1 in a non-district game. The Knights are 2-7.

Matt Curfiss scored with 10 minutes remaining to give host Northside (4-5, 4-3) a 4-3 win over Alleghany in a Blue Ridge District game.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Leighton Kirby scored two goals as Martinsville beat host Cave Spring 4-2 in a non-district game. Anne Schleupner had both of Cave Spring's goals.

\ SOFTBALL: In Hillsville, Carroll County split a doubleheader with Floyd County in non-district action.

Carroll County won the first game 7-5 as Bethany Hill was 2-for-3. Floyd's Sandy Sutphin was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI in the second game as the Buffaloes won 22-3.

In Hot Springs, Angie Sink had three hits and two RBI as James River (11-1, 5-0) beat Bath County 18-3 in a Pioneer District game. Sara Mundy pitched a two-hitter for the Knights. The Chargers are 3-7 and 1-4.

April Updike was 3-for-3 with two RBI as host Roanoke Valley Christian (5-4, 3-1) beat Hargrave Military 9-3 in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

\ TRACK: A pair of Rockbridge County athletes set school records in the Wildcats' 85-41 boys' track meet win over Lord Botetourt.

David Early set a school record in the long jump, leaping 21 feet, 7 1/2 inches, breaking the record of 20-11. Early also won the 100- and 200-meters and was on the winning 400-meter relay team.

Derek Radford set the school record in the high jump. His leap of 6-4 broke the old record of 6-2. Lord Botetourt beat Rockbridge County in the girls' meet, 77-45.
