NEW OFFICE FOR PINCKARD

Former Franklin County Commissioner of Revenue Ben Pinckard was elected Tuesday night to Rocky Mount Town Council, along with an incumbent and a political newcomer.

Pinckard got 422 votes in the five-person race for three open seats. He retired Feb. 28 after almost two decades as commissioner of revenue.

Incumbent Steven Angle led the ticket for Town Council with 505 votes, followed by Pinckard and Bobby Cundiff with 366.

Pinckard and Cundiff, owner of True Value Hardware in Rocky Mount, ran on the theme that economic development is the key to the town's prosperity.

"If we stay stymied, we are going to wither and die," Pinckard said. "We've got to change if we're going to grow and prosper."

Pinckard advocates annexing part of Franklin County and working to attract at least one high-tech industry. "Rocky Mount is the keystone of this community," he said. "People around the town would like to be in the town for the water and sewer systems and other services."

Broaddus Shively, who ran unopposed, was re-elected mayor easily with 515 votes.

Of the town's 1,861 registered voters, about 39 percent voted.
