The Rotary Club of Roanoke recently honored several Roanokers at its' 80th anniversary dinner.
The recipients were given Paul Harris Fellowship awards for community leadership, and $1,000 was donated to the Rotary Foundation in their names. Harris founded the Rotary in 1905. Those honored were: Bev Fitzpatrick of New Century Council; Victoria Bond of the Roanoke Symphony; Rupert Cutler of Explore Park; Maj. Dan Delaney of the Salvation Army; Ted Carroll of the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center; Judge Philip Trompeter, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court; and Corrine Gott of the Roanoke Social Services Department.
Greenvale School will celebrate anniversary
Greenvale School is seeking former teachers, students and their families, and board and auxiliary members for the school's 60th anniversary picnic celebration.
A new playground will be dedicated, and entertainment will be provided.
The picnic will be held from noon to 2 p.m. June 25 on the school grounds at 627 Westwood Blvd.

Roanoker recognized for service in Army
The quartermaster general of the United States Army has recognized a Roanoke man for "distinguished" service in the quartermaster corps.
Retired Col. Norman E. Elmore of Dexter Road Northwest was inducted as a distinguished member of the the U.S. Army Quartermaster Regiment at a ceremony at Fort Lee, in March.
The Distinguished Members of the Regiment program recognizes quartermasters who have performed exceptional services and made significant contributions to the corps.
Elmore was commissioned a second lieutenant in the corps at Fort Lee in September 1942, after two years of enlisted service in the 116th Regiment, 29th Infantry Division.
He served in logistical assignments at the Richmond Armed Services Depot and the Office of the Quartermaster General in Washington in World War II and on the Army General Staff in the Pentagon during the Korean War.
Elmore was promoted to the rank of colonel in 1965 and retired in 1975 after the 33 years of active and reserve Army duty.
He is an active member of the 29th Division Association, the Retired Officers Association, the Military Order of World Wars, the Korean War Veterans Associations, the American Legion and the board of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation.
College giving women a `Second Chance'
National Business College is sponsoring the "Second Chance" program for displaced homemakers and dislocated workers.
The free, three-hour Friday sessions are for women re-entering the work force and will be held weekly from 9 a.m. until noon at the college's Salem campus, from Friday through June 10.
Scheduled speakers include: Linda Weisgerber of Interim Personnel; Eva Estep, regional director of health care for Interim Medical Personnel; Gary Sheffler, work force information coordinator for the Virginia Employment Commission; and Judy Steelman, career center director at the college.
