Bankruptcy court gets 3 petitions

Three bankruptcies with business connections have been filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia at Roanoke:

David Walker Stroud of Mud Lick Road in Roanoke filed for liquidation, listing assets of $193,893 and liabilities of $547,065. He is a physician and partner in Garst & Stroud OB-Gyn.

Panther Colliers Inc., a mining company at North Tazewell, had assets of $1,100 and no liabilities. It asked for liquidation.

William Thomas Wohlford and Mary Clare D. Wohlford of Wytheville reported assets of $120,750 and liabilities of $147,706. They said they have an electrical contracting business and a goat farm.

Foundation seeks grant proposals

The Foundation for Roanoke Valley, an administrator of local trusts, is soliciting proposals for grants from two funds, each expected to disperse $2,000 during their current cycles. The Thomas P. and Lewise P. Parsely Fund is to provide medicine for the elderly and the needy, support community programs addressing substance abuse and health services for needy families. The C. Mead Boxley Memorial Fund is to assist disadvantaged children under 6 and agencies focused on research and treatment of spinal-cord injuries.

Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society has moved its Southwest Virginia service center to the Fralin & Waldron Office Park, 3800 Electric Road, Roanoke. The office was at 3201 Brandon Ave.

Summit Vendors Roanoke Inc. of Salem said it has won a five-year contract to provide food and vending services at both Elizabeth Arden Co. plants in Roanoke.

Modine Manufacturing Co., Racine, Wis., maker of heating and ventilation equipment with operations in Buena Vista, reported earnings of $44 million, or $1.41 a share in its fiscal year ended March 31, up from $20 million, or $1.12 a share a year earlier. Sales were $669.6 million compared with $570.8 million the year before.

In its fourth quarter, Modine's net earnings rose 15 percent to $11 million, or 35 cents per share, while sales rose 32 percent to $193.1 million.
