"The main reason for introducing [Myszka] was to share books," said Jakubowski. "We really had no idea she would take on such an important role."
Jakubowski, known as "Mrs. J" to the kids, said Myszka sits in her lap and helps write letters to the children.
"It's getting to the point that I believe we're two different beings," she said. "As long as the [children] believe in her and she has some valid reason for being here, she will be here."
The government students at AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL have been working on an economic development plan for their community and will hold a conference and round-table discussion of their results Thursday at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
Community members who have questions about development will have a chance to talk to planners, developers and government officials from the Riner area.

Radford, Auburn and Christiansburg high schools will be holding all-night AFTER PROM PARTIES Saturday.
The Radford party will be held in Peters Hall on the Radford University campus after the prom. Tickets are $5 per student. Michelle Bishop, a junior at the school, won a cash prize for coming up with this year's theme: the Wild West Fiesta.

The Christiansburg party will begin at 11 p.m. Saturday in New River Valley Mall. Some of the featured attractions will be a Velcro wall jumping booth, sumo wrestling and karaoke. The Floyd Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association will hold its SPRING FESTIVAL Saturday from 3-7 p.m. There will be food, games and fun for the entire family. The event will be held at the school.
The Pulaski Middle School Playermakers will perform "The Diary of Anne Frank" Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium. A Sunday matinee will be performed at 3 p.m. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students. On Sunday, $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the relief effort in Bosnia.
The Gilbert Linkous Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association is sponsoring its first BIKE RODEO Sunday from 2-4:30 p.m. to raise children's awareness of bicycle safety. Bring your bicycle helmet and bike. All children must be accompanied by a parent.
The Blacksburg Police Department, East Coasters Bike Shop and Sub Station II are sponsoring the event, which will be held in the school parking lot. Lunches will be available for $2 a person. For further information, call the school at 951-5726.
New River Community College is seeking students for a summer youth program called EARN WHILE YOU LEARN. A $61,000 grant will allow 34 young people between the ages of 14 and 21 to earn minimum wage ($4.25) while taking classes and gaining work experience. Disabled and economically disadvantaged students will receive preference for the program. Applications are available in Godbey Hall on the school campus and are due by May 18.

Several AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS have been commended for excellence.
Angela Gilmer, daughter of Roger and Barbara Gilmer, has received an academic scholarship to Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg. She is a senior at Pulaski County High School and plans to major in premedicine and biology.
Bernard Epperly of Giles High School recently received a scholarship to attend a leadership conference in Washington. He is a member of the Virginia Tech Talent Search and Upward Bound programs, which supports local high school students who plan to go to college.
Shriti Patel of Radford and Becky McDaniel of Blacksburg were named to the high list at Episcopal High School in Alexandria. Patel participates in the dance program and was a member of the school's winter production of "Pippin." She is the daughter of Bharat and Bharti Patel.
McDaniel is active with the school's outdoor club and literary society and acts as a student tour guide. She is the daughter of David and Ellie McDaniel.
Sarah Clements, a Blacksburg High School distance swimmer, has signed a grant-in-aid letter with Ashland University in Ohio, and will receive an academic and athletic scholarship of $11,800 annually. She is the daughter of Don and Esther Clements.
To celebrate EARTH DAY, several area schools planned special activities. Pupils at Gilbert Linkous Elementary and Christiansburg Primary schools planted a tree at their schools. Elliston-Lafayette pupils came in first in a textile-recycling contest sponsored by the public schools. They collected 15.41 pounds of textiles. Riner Elementary came in second with 11.34 pounds.
The Radford Army Ammunition Plant sponsored Earth Day activities at an Environmental Awareness Fair. Students competed in contests such as science projects, poster-decorating contests and visual displays using video.
First-place winners were: Alicia Reed, J.C. Mitcham, Logan Tiebout, Heather Moses, Amanda Bryant, Amy Zeh, Whitney Hawkins and Lori Smith from Riner Elementary; Joshua Blankenship from Giles County; Emily King, Brian Boggess and Emily Turner from Radford High School; Joshua Lucas from Narrows Elementary; and Jessica Mullins from Dalton Intermediate School.
