PATRIOTS WIN RVD SOCCER TITLE

Jack Edwards had a goal and he assisted on Hanes Feldmann's score as Patrick Henry shut out Franklin County 2-0 in a playoff game at Cave Spring Middle School that gave the Patriots the Roanoke Valley District regular-season championship. Chris Andres had six saves, including stops of two one-on-one breakaways, in registering his fifth shutout of the season.

Patrick Henry (8-5-3, 7-1-1) and Franklin County (8-3-4, 5-1-3) finished the season with 13 points in district play, making the playoff necessary.

The Patriots, who automatically qualify for the Northwestern Region playoffs, play William Fleming today at 6 p.m. in the RVD tournament at Franklin County. The Eagles play Cave Spring at 8 p.m.

In other high school sports Monday:

Kevin Graham scored three goals for William Fleming as the Colonels beat Pulaski County 5-3 in a Roanoke Valley District tournament first-round game at River's Edge Sports Complex. Fleming (9-6) plays top-seeded Patrick Henry today at Franklin County High School.

At Northside, Mike Curme, Ryan Wickstrom and Greg Cottone scored goals as the Vikings beat Alleghany 3-1 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Northside (6-8) plays Salem in a semifinal match Wednesday at Lord Botetourt.

Rockbridge County (4-7) got goals from Josef Dostal, Albert Nedrow, Martin Mayerchak and Brennan Gilmore to beat Lord Botetourt in a Blue Ridge District tournament game. The Wildcats play William Byrd on Wednesday at Lord Botetourt. Robert Snell and Mike Gates scored for Lord Botetourt (2-9).

GIRLS' SOCCER: Emily Bryant Holly Spraker each scored overtime goals to lead Patrick Henry (14-0) to a 4-2 win over Albemarle (8-4-1) in a non-district match. Bryant and Spraker scored two goals to account for all of the scoring for the Patriots, who play Cave Spring for the Roanoke Valley District championship Wednesday at Franklin County High School. Both Patrick Henry and Cave Spring will advance to the Northwest Region playoffs.

BASEBALL: At Blacksburg, R.J. Beckwith (2-0) hurled a complete-game three-hitter as Salem (9-6-1) battered Blacksburg 15-1. Greg Harrison had two hits and three RBI for the Spartans, who also got a pair of hits from Seth Moore and Kevin Feazell.

At Bedford, Jamie Dooley and Johnny Cash were 3-for-3, Brian Long homered and Jon Gordon knocked in four runs as Liberty (7-10) beat Altavista 17-0 in a five-inning game.

At Narrows, Whitey Blankenship's three-run home run helped the Green Wave top Shawsville 8-2 in a Mountain Empire District game. Blankenship's second-inning homer made it 6-0. Jeff White pitched a complete game for Narrows (11-4 overall, 7-2 in the district), allowing five hits, walking five and striking out 11. Shawsville fell to 10-7 and 4-4.

David Dixon and Kameron Crowder each hit their sixth home runs of the year, and Todd Cook 3-for-3 for Alleghany (11-4) as the Mountaineers laid an 18-9 clubbing on Riverheads (6-7).

SOFTBALL: At Altavista, the Dooley sisters were a combined 9-for-11 at the plate with 11 RBI as Liberty routed Altavista 30-3 in a Seminole District game. Melissa Dooley was 5-for-6, including two triples, and had seven RBI. Liberty's Selena Byers was 2-for-3 with five RBI. Liberty (13-4 overall and in the district) had 21 hits, six for extra bases. Altavista fell to 1-17 overall and in the district.
